Description

Far from the traditional Christmas-card image, the place of Christ’s birth was not a quaint manger laden with hay. It was a dimly-lit rock cave. The site of our Lord’s humble beginnings, has been honored and preserved for centuries.  The exact spot is marked beneath an altar by a 14-pointed silver star on the marble floor of the Grotto and bears the words “Hic de Virgine Maria Jesus Christus natus est” (Here Jesus Christ was born to the Virgin Mary).

Hand-painted in brilliant colors, this more than a century old image of the pilgrimage site wonderfully highlights the detail of the manger. It reminds one of the time and reverence put into honoring this site and the joy of all it represents.
