Description

Founded in the 5th century by hermits who believed this to be the site where the prophet Elijah was fed by ravens, this striking site of the cliff-hanging complex carved into sheer rock, still exists today as a pilgrimage site in the Holy Land and is inhabited by Eastern Orthodox monks.

Christian tradition tells us that St. Joachim, father of the Virgin Mary, stopped at this site to lament the barrenness of his wife, St. Anne, until an angel arrived to tell him she would conceive.
